Cartoon Eye Study

Doing another post. Really can't say why I stopped posting except that I got SERIOUSLY burned by all these social network things. Families (mother and father) logging online after doing Google searches with my name, seeing pictures of me hold beers (NON ALCOHOLIC) and totally freaking out as if I was 15. Pretty lame. My family is about as tight as the Pope's anus.

You know had I known that every MORON i know, friends, family everyone, would be DEPENDENT on computers, I would have never gotten into them. See chances are pretty good I was typing on a computer at 50 wpm before you even ever looked at one.

It sucks.

But not only that, this blog was actually a little sister blog (or wanted to be) of my friend's blog who apparrently also lost the urge to finish stuff up as well.

oh well. here is the latest sketch I feel like showing. (The other sketches I have been doing are for a cartoon so I don't want to show them)

Destroyer

So I pulled into the Dr.Sketchy parking lot... sat there waited a while. Called some friends. Decided to go out to eat.

It's not that I would have to draw a near naked dude. I've been through art class. I've done that. I've hung out with some friends of mine who are gay and they like to look at naked dudes all the time. Not scared of that.

What I am scared of are a lot of these fucking people that go to this Dr.Sketchy thing. First off the Houston photographers seem to overwhelm the scene. (I just deleted about 3 sentences) The artists stick to themselves and never comment on other peoples stuff. They just sort of glare over to see if they are going to get more acceptance than others.

I was able to get into it free of charge but now it looks like it would have costed me a lot. A lunch with a friend. I'll see about next time.

Ashley

Superduper quickie sketch of Ash. She texted me a lot last night and we talked on phone for a while. She seems like something is bothering her. I have no idea why. I figured I would sneak in a break and draw her real quick.

Guest Sketcher - B.D.

Today's guest Sketcher is BD

When I first moved into town in the middle of summer 08 I went to our favorite hangout spot Cecil's. There I was noticing these wonderful character sketches drawn on bar napkins hanging up above the door that led to the back area of the bar. I asked the bartender Jay about these sketches and he pulled out two tuperware tubs...filled to the top with napkins and artwork by a local artist named Brent Himes who goes by the name BD. So thrilled I was when I saw his drawing of Sergio Aragonés of Groo fame. Who the hell sits in a bar and draws the creator of Groo?!? I knew instantly this guy was someone I had to meet.

Sure enough as time went on and my love for Cecil's has now become a ritual with friends I have found this guy. He's a great dude and I look forward to hanging out with him in the future. Very inspiring. I would love to do an animated project with BD. Which reminds me, I know I've been doing a lot of 3D and graphic design stuff at work... But it's time to set some time aside for myself. GET TO SKETCHING!!!

Dr. Sketchy February 2009

I had a great time at the Houston Dr. Sketchy for February at Avant Garden. Can't believe how cool it was. I am so glad that there is something like this in Houston. The art scene here constantly amazes me. Your band however doesn't. Thank goodness. To hell with what the beer swillin' punk rock/metal kids think, Drinking Mamosas on Sunday while drawing a beauty like her is the best.

The model, Katrina, was so adorable.

2 minute sketch warmups

I love the way they start loose and fast with short times. Very art school for the Anti-Art school but that is the best way to start cranking on still life. The seating however was crazy weird. More like a junior high class room than an art school setting where the model is in the middle and it goes all the way around in a circle. (But I guess they lack room? I don't know, i think it could be tried in the middle.) Worked great nonetheless.

Katrina was too cute. I thought it interesting how much freakin' shading a lot of people where putting into her drawings. I decided to go for more outlines and not a shade study... well except for the one that got me the free pass for next time.

longer sketches

This one had a theme. Naughty Cupid I didn't really care about the whole theme/contest thing and I lost out to Kendle?(forgot your name dude). However I didn't come there to draw comic books images with a mechanical pencil so I lost out on that deal.

I did notice that some people would go back to their drawings and work on them after the pose changed. I am having a hard time with this Anti-Art class thing in that respect. I would have been yelled at in art school for doing that. But I came there to look at the model vs. looking at my drawing and trying to figure out ways to trick it up.

My favorite....sigh... The heart was actually a heart object on the wall. It started to become more of a symbol of my fascination with the model at this point. But I love the way it just floats in my sketches like a halo of love.

Another contest 'dirty thoughts' At this point I didn't care. Again I was more interested in using my paper to have nice composition of the model. You can't take the art school outta me Dr. Sketchy. ;) There was a fella sitting behind me named Jeff who did the contest really well without changing the model into something unrecognizable. The lady next to me Puddles was giving him grief over it, but apparently she has earned the right to do so.

This was my last sketch. At this point the model kept fanning her exposed breast and winking at me. I wasn't the only one she was winking at (Howie...) but I definately had that feeling (and actions) of Napoleon Dynamites Brother sitting at the picnic bench with his hot African American gal. So naturally I didn't go as far with this sketch as I could have in the 20 minute time. Also had to get another mimosa or two during it to settle down.

And the winner is...

She picked the winning sketch. I won a free trip to return to Dr.Sketchy in March. And I really hope they do not book this on a Saturday during SXSW. If not then I am there. Dude model or not.

Character Sketches

prepare to see a lot of quick pose sketches like these. Not the most interesting things in sketchbooks, but most critical to whip out often for myself.
